Presentation raises questions about 9/11 attacks
Issue Date 9/17/2008
It took singer-songwriter Jesse Goplen almost a year of research before he believed that the U.S. government carried out the September 11 attacks. "There's so much disinformation, it's hard to figure out what's real," he said.
Goplen performed at 9/11: Fast Track to Fascism last Thursday, the seventh anniversary of the attacks. He used his blend of acoustic blues and old-time country music to show his feelings about the alleged conspiracy in his song "Controlled Demolition." "It's up to me and you//to find out what went wrong//to find out what is true," Goplen sang.
Some of the songs Goplen played were about using your own judgment and research to find the truth in today's world. "I do talk a lot about 9/11 in my music right now, but I haven't always and hopefully my next album will be a sort of 9/12, getting beyond it," he said.
Goplen played pieces on different topics as well, including his current home, in "Humboldt County Rainbow." The independent artist is originally from Wisconsin, but after going to Germany and developing ideas about personal freedom, he came to Humboldt. Goplen now says he could never leave "the most beautiful place on earth."
Goplen covered songs by artists such as Willie Nelson and Reverend Gary Davis in addition to his original music.
The 9/11 Truth Club presented Fast Track to Fascism. It focused on holding those the club views as responsible for the tragedy accountable. Proceeds from the night were donated to the families of 9/11 victims.
During opening remarks, the 9/11 Truth Club highlighted how policies designed to protect us, such as the Patriot Act, take away our freedoms and violate our right to privacy. Then the club presented caricatures representing members of the Bush Administration. Some of the comics insinuated that they were directly responsible for the September 11th attacks, while others compared them to Nazis.
The final portion of the presentation was a screening of Jason Bermas's "Fabled Enemies." This film depicts the search for Osama Bin Laden as a scheme to scare the American people into supporting war in Iraq and Afghanistan. "Fabled Enemies" proposes that Bin Laden was a scapegoat and had no connection to the attacks.
A.S. Student Affairs Vice President Gabe Shames said he suggested that the 9/11 Truth Club hold an event on the anniversary. He said he understands why people resist the idea of being manipulated by their government. "I've seen some videos [about the conspiracy] that are just as baseless as the mainstream media's story," said Shames. Shames wanted a forum for people to weigh their personal research against the official report. Once people start talking, Shames said, they would probably agree that there is deception in the media.
Josh Roberts, an Arcata resident and a member of the 9/11 Truth Club, helped organize Fast Track to Fascism. He hopes the presentation brought awareness of dissent.
"Listen to everybody. Read everything. Believe absolutely nothing unless you can prove it with your own research."

Students spend summer in Mexican oasis
My first article in the Lumberjack as a staff writer.
Issue Date 9/10/2008
This summer, Humboldt State University students participated in a cultural immersion program in the small community of Parras, Mexico. Although this program focuses on Spanish studies and appropriate technology, it was beneficial to students of all majors.
Dessie Woods, a political science and international studies senior, needed to travel abroad to fulfill her graduation requirements. The Parras program was less expensive and more community-based than some of the other abroad programs available to Humboldt State students, Woods said.
Woods learned that she could build bonds with people regardless of cultural or language barriers from working in an organic garden and teaching children about nutrition. "The world feels much more open now," she said.
Each student lived in a different household and participated in family events, birthday parties and reunions. Woods said she was nervous at first but her family ended up being the best part of her experience in Parras. "It was hard to adjust, but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat."
Students studied different appropriate technologies: things that can be sustained in some environments but not others. They worked in small groups on projects, such as a solar water pasteurizer and a rainwater catchment system. All of the students worked together on the continuous development of an adobe senior center. Those who come to Parras next summer will be completing the roof of the building.
"The opportunities to learn and pull examples from different cultures was probably the most important part of the trip for me," said Environmental Resources Engineering junior Joey Hiller.
Power is currently very expensive in Mexico, he said, and most people get electricity from coal and oil.
Hiller worked with other students on a prototype for a solar-operated refrigeration system. This technology is expensive now, but once it is produced on a larger scale, it can be used in warmer regions of the world.
The students also attended a one-week international conference with more than 100 scholars from around the world. People presented papers on social and scientific aspects of the desert including irrigation, anthropology and construction.
Spanish Literature instructor Francisco de la Cabada and Environmental Resources Engineering and Appropriate Technology lecturer Lonny Grafman created the Parras program five years ago. Grafman said the program has given students a heightened sense of culture and a greater understanding of the Spanish language.
"You go with preconceived notions and come back with new ideas," he said. He continued by saying that since Mexico is our neighbor, we should do our best to immerse ourselves in their culture and build ties with the communities there.
Grafman explained how adobe is an example of an appropriate technology in Mexico. "It is a fantastic material, but like most appropriate technologies, it is only right for certain situations," he said. For instance, Humboldt is too cold and wet for adobe houses to work, Grafman explained, so sustainably harvested wood or straw bale would be a better option.
De la Cabada said he now has the funding and resources to build CCCEED-H, the Spanish acronym for the Center for Scientific and Cultural Studies of the Desert-Humboldt. This educational center will be a replica of CCAT, and will be open to students, scholars and the entire Parras community, said de la Cabada. "Its main focus is developing technologies that can be applied and implemented by society at a low cost." He is welcoming new students and around 80 others who have gone to Parras in previous years to work at CCCEED-H.
The ten-week program is one of the most affordable opportunities for Humboldt State students to engage in a different culture. The experience gives one a new appreciation of sustainable living and the Spanish language. De la Cabada encourages students of all majors to take part in this continuous project.

What do rat poison, nerve gas and your drinking water all have in common?
The active ingredient in common pesticides such as Roaches Last Meal is sodium fluoride. This is the same active ingredient in fluoride toothpaste, and the same chemical now being force-fed to Californians.
The state passed legislation requiring fluoridation of all water systems that do not contain high levels of fluoride naturally. The explanation for this is that fluoride is good for our teeth.
It has been proven over the decades that fluoride can help prevent tooth decay when applied to the teeth of adults. However, according thousands of health care professionals such as Dr. Hardy Limeback, President of the Canadian Association for Dental Research and head of the Department of Preventive Dentistry for the University of Toronto, too much fluoride can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. This condition weakens bones and makes teeth brittle and discolored.
Even the California Consumers’ Guide to Community Water Fluoridation (a pro-fluoridation document) admits, “[f]luorosis occurs when children consume more than optimal amounts of fluoride during tooth development.”
This fails to take into account that if all our water is fluoridated, the chemical will be in all of our food as well. There is no way of telling exactly how much fluoride you are consuming each day. And because every individual body is different, there is no way of knowing how much is too much.
Tubes of Aquafresh fluoride toothpaste warn to “keep out of the reach of children under 6 years of age,” and to call a Poison Control Center if one swallows more than used for brushing. Why is this?
According to the Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, fluoride is more toxic than lead. It is used in insecticides and rat poisons even today. It is a basic ingredient in Sarin, the deadly nerve gas released in Tokyo trains by terrorists in 1995. It is a glorified poison. The dangers of fluoride grossly outweigh its single benefit: cavity prevention.
Most Americans like to believe that our government seeks to protect our enamel but we cannot deny that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Regardless of intentions, forcing us to ingest a deadly chemical, even in small doses, is a grave mistake. We are being denied the right to decide what we put into our bodies.
There are alternative, more cost efficient methods to fluoride distribution that would allow individuals to get a dosage that is safe for them, such as free tablets or bottled fluoridated water. This would also respect those who want to avoid ingesting it but cannot afford expensive fluoride removal devices.
We can all do something to end community water fluoridation by letting our voices be heard. The office address and phone number of your California representative can be found online at leginfo.ca.gov.

There's Dog in my Deodorant
On Tuesday night I went to "Beyond Our Diet" hosted by Always Working for Animal Rights and Equality (AWARE). The presentation focused on non-edible animal products. Most of the presentation did not apply to me personally; I've never really liked leather, I'm allergic to wool, and pearls and silk are too expensive for a college student on full financial aid. I read labels to make sure the companies I give my money to do not test on animals. However, I did not know that many products that are not tested on animals contain ingredients such as tallow and/or glycerin.
When Recycling Goes Wrong:
Tallow glycerin is produced at Rendering Plants. Rendering Plants collect slaughterhouse waste such as heads and hooves (from cows and pigs), euthanized companion animals (such as cats and dogs), roadkill (rats and raccoons), and spoiled, rejected meat from supermarkets.
This makes up the bulk of raw materials, but lots of other toxic waste gets mixed in as well, such as insecticides that poisoned livestock have consumed, chemicals leaked from antibiotics in livestock, the euthanasia drugs given to companion animals, the poisonous flea collars from dead companion animals, and plastics from cattle ID tags and the bags containing dead pets from veterinarians.
All this is thrown into huge vats and cooked at around 300 degrees Fahrenheit for several days until a yellowish grease rises to the top and is skimmed off. This grease is primarily animal fat, but contains trace amounts of the toxins mentioned above. It is used in household items such as margarines, toothpastes, mouthwashes, deodorants and pet food. (Rumor has is that McDonald's uses tallow glycerin in their fries, but we won't go there...)
It can be hard to spot this on labels because not all glycerin is made from animal fat; some is made from vegetables. If it says it contains glycerin, glycerol, of stearic acid, check to see if it also says, "Contains no animal products." If it says tallow, that means animal fat. Always.
My friends have tried to assure me that the actual amount of dog is so minimal that it really doesn't matter. I don't care. This is fucking gross and I won't have any part of it. Besides, I personally don't see how dogs and cats are any more special that cows and pigs. They are all living creatures and deserve a better fate than being rubbed on my armpits.
It was almost discouraging to me to find that I am not so far along on my quest for a cruelty-free lifestyle as I thought, but then I learned of how many vegan companies there are who abstain from using animals for human gain. I'm already most of the way to my goal of strict veganism; the only animal products I eat come from milk, and I only eat milk products at the J. But with this new information, I think I will be able to reach my goal of being a complete hardcore vegan by the end of this semester.

Nobody Listens To Techno
I went home this weekend and I had planed to go to a rave in San Francisco called "Nobody Listens To Techno". But I got food poisoning on Thursday and was still not feeling well the next day, so no rave pictures this week.
But on the good side of things, I did get a new camera! I'll post pictures of the camera once I figure out how to take pictures of it with it.

Introduction:
I didn't want to have to make a bunch of blogs that I rarely update, so I just made one that will serve many purposes.
So far these purposes include:
1. I will be posting playlists twice a week for my shows on KRFH.net The Asylum and Rehab.
2. Underground party updates and pictures.
3. Green-Anarcho-Communist political rants slamming the Man.
4. Discussion of what we as citizens can do to bring down the Man.
Things are just beginning to develop, but I will be posting more and more frequently.
